We transform English-speaking, low-literate adults, who live in Salt Lake or Davis Counties in Utah, into skilled, passionate, habitual, critical readers, writers, and mathematicians. We also educate community volunteers to work one-on-one or in group settings with these adult learners. For more information, see www.LiteracyActionCenter.org. Working with Tom by Casey
I started working at the Literacy Action Center in November 2009. I am working with a student named Tom, who is print challenged. Since I have been working with him, he has come a long way. He can spell better and identify words better than when I started working with him. When I started working with him, he could only basically spell his name, mom and dad. Now he can spell words like fish, man, has, in and hand (along with a few other words). He can identify actions, such as jumping and kicking. He gets homework on the days that he attends the Literacy Action Center, which helps him learn while at home. His progress makes me feel like I am making a difference in his life and in his education.
