Discussion. Decision-making. The coming together of our instructional units is a group effort. I know you hear horrible things about committees and meetings. However, in our case, group planning is extremely productive. Group planning allows all of us to engage in the process and be partners, even if the initial idea belonged to someone else. We also discuss which College & Career Readiness (CCR) Standards we'll focus on in each instructional unit. And, more importantly, what our final product will be.

As you can see from the time schedule above, we have set up three instructional units for Tuesday mornings for November & December 2021.

Why in this order?

The question posed was "What will get you up excited to come to class in the morning?" This group agreed whole-heartedly that "How Things Work" would do it.

Execution

Execution is on me. I have to take the content and figure out how to best deliver it for maximum benefit. We talk about the CCR Standards during our planning, but I'm responsible for ensuring that these skills and abilities are effectively integrated into instruction.

How Things Work. This unit is about understanding the mechanics or workings of every day items or things in our lives. We'll look at the operations or science behind six every day "things." Our focus will be on growing vocabulary, taking notes, explaining processes, developing presentation skills, and giving supporting evidence. Each lesson will be delivered via a set of Google slides. These lessons will include both video and written information. Each lesson will end with a short quiz.

Instructional Focus. What "things" will we focus on, you ask? That's still up for debate. I chose the first item. See the photo at the top. We brainstormed several ideas, then I added to them. In the end, I created a survey for the group to score in class this week. The items with the highest numbers will the ones we include.

End Product. Learners will identify how the lessons are being presented. One lesson will be specific about how to make a video. During the course of the two months, learners will each identify one item to explore on their own. We'll end the unit with each learner sharing a self-made video explaining how his/her item works.

Story Problems Using Realia. Realia - objects & materials from everyday life used as teaching aids - was our first vocabulary word in this unit. They asked for "real" story problems linked to "real" situations in their adult lives. Again, we brainstormed possible realia we could use. I put together a survey for them to score at our next lesson. Meanwhile, our first lesson will focus on reading a map and figuring out distances. This realia will be an extension of our previous unit on map reading skills and trip planning.

Instructional Focus. We agreed to focus on identify language that helps you decide which math operations to use, how to turn story problems into equations, how to solve the equations, and how to know if your answer is credible.

End Product. This unit will have a daily win - learn about real math-related items from our daily lives, but no final product for display at the end of this unit.

Reader's Sprint & Share. This unit is instructional in a different way. The sprint part is about reading silently for a given period of time in a book of one's choice.

Instructional Focus. The share part of this sprint focuses on practicing summarizing. Learners write in their notebooks about what they learned during silently reading, then type the summaries into chat to share with us all.

We read aloud our summaries and briefly discuss them. Feedback depends entirely on the content of the summaries. Feedback may be specific about the structure of the summary. Feedback may be a conversation about the details of the summary. Or, feedback may even be questions or further requests for examples supporting the summary's content.

The point here is to use writing to summarize. Then, use oral language to further explore and communicate ideas.

End Product. This unit will have a daily win - develop summarization skills, but no final product for display at the end of this unit.

Next?

What would you do to pull together instruction with an impact on life? We are a group of learners and tutors interested in expressing ourselves through audio.

We've been meeting twice a week since May 2020. No, we don't have a polished podcast for you to listen to yet.

We are still experimenting and exploring with all aspects of producing these podcasts. But we have finally made these decisions.

Just this month, we identified a platform - player.fm (part of Acorn). We're working on cover art. We've selected a name -

Adult Literacy Matters: Coming Together; Changing Lives

Format

Identifying a format has taken most of our time. Our initial practice has focused on developing our interviewing skills by interviewing many learners about who they are, their reasons for coming to our center, and their recommendations for other adults needing help.

More recently, we've explored the idea of panel discussions. For example, three learners talked about their favorite restaurants and literacy issues related to eating at restaurants. Another panel looked at a McDonald's menu and discussed what they saw and understood about these menus. (Very eye-opening.) Another group talked about medications - instructions, dosages, and side-effects - and the impact of their literacy issues on keeping themselves and their families safe.

Your Support

Are these two formats of interest to you? Why? This picture represents some great books for reading together, but these are not the stories listed below. The books in the photo require great amounts of work - rereading, retelling, and summarizing - for our adults to be able to read them. That's why we read these types of books over time in small groups. Eventually, these books become approachable and readable for our adults. In the beginning, however, one-page stories from the sites listed above help our learners grow site vocabulary one-page-at-a-time chunks.

Literacy Action Centerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12827974668929808473noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5258430543653784000.post-49270501068947265282020-08-24T18:09:00.005-06:002020-09-15T16:37:14.621-06:003 Job Openings: Teachers & Coordinator
One focus of this unit is about cooking tools. Because of the pandemic, face-to-face instruction is out of the question. So, we adapted this section to get us to look in our own kitchen cupboards and drawers. You can see some of the gadgets we found at our learner site.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">We spent weeks exploring the science behind these gadgets - learning about the six basic machines that underlie all gadgets and tools, even kitchen ones.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">We learned from Live Science that these six machines help:

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Now that we're done studying - identifying how these tools use the principals behind the six simple machines, we are ready to take a quiz.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Hi, this is Deb. <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Teaching at Literacy Action Center can be eye-opening at times. <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Putting everyone into this pandemic situation has definitely intensified some aspects of life - for all of us.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">What I've come to realize over the past few months however is that these adults have these powerful tools with them 24/7 but don't necessarily use them to do any of the tasks and opportunities listed in the opening paragraph above.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

Here's my point

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: x-large;">What if your literacy skills were an issue?

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">You struggle to type the simplest text message or email.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Not because your typing speed is slow but you don't know how to spell. You lose the words you want to say as you start spelling the first word. And yeah, the words pop up as you type but you haven't a clue as to what they say.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Someone set up your Facebook account. You get lots of posts. You've learned how to like and share them, but you don't understand how these messages get made or posted....
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">That's just the beginning of the massive amount of print bombarding you daily (during these trying times) that makes no sense.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">For example, West wants to pass the driver license test so he can look for jobs outside of the bus system. <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">We've been Zooming since Wednesday, March 18. We needed several weeks to get familiar with the Zoom environment - teaching each other about the ins and outs of navigating conversation and instruction online.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Since our second week on line, we've been working through math and grammar lessons. We've been reading stories and books. We've been writing and sharing our writings.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
We finally felt like we could squeeze more into our time together. We're finally back to working on our units of interest - the topics that we said we wanted to know more about.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Thursday mornings is about cooking. More specifically, tools, techniques, and flavors.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">We may be online, but we still need novelty and interaction. So, last week, we reopened our cooking discussion with Mystery Kitchen Gadget #1 (see the picture at the top).

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">We were regular detectives - looking at this gadget's construction (parts), speculating on its action (movement), and proposing its function (purpose).

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This serious discussion included a range of suggestions, such as dog nail clippers or a hole punch.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This morning we had 10 gadgets to examine.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">We learned and just had plain fun! Laughter was contagious! <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Note: What did this have to do with adult literacy? Everything. Learners had to think. They had to problem solve, use reasoning skills, and make interpretations. In some cases, learners Googled their ideas to further refine their knowledge about about how a gadget worked. And, they had to negotiate so they could come back to the group with a presentation. (We used Zoom's features to make this happen: breakout rooms, screen sharing, and screen annotations.) - Deb

What if you can't read the words on the card

or, worse yet, misread the words?

A week ago, a learner came in excited about Valentine's Day. The learner told me that he'd never given anyone a Valentine card before. This year, he was sending a card to someone special - a young woman that he was getting to know and wanted to let her know that he liked her.

This young man planned it out. He showed me the gift - a lovely necklace and earring set. He had a container to ship them in. He had the woman's mailing address. He was psyched.

That evening, we brainstormed the personal note he wanted to include with the card and gift. The learner then went on to write his Valentine note with help from a tutor. He left the center early that evening to buy his Valentine's Day card.

Two nights later the learner showed me the card he had selected. I asked him to read the card to me. The card is pictured above - please take a moment to read it. Really read it.

Do you see the fourth line? Do you see the words "my daughter?" He read "daughter" as "dear?" He thought the card was for a sweetheart, not a daughter.

How would you feel if you found out the card

you picked turned out to be for the wrong person?

He was devastated.

What would you have done?

What I did was discuss the message of the card versus the message the learner wanted to send. Then, we brainstormed what words he wanted the next card to say so that he could pick a more appropriate card.

I didn't see the card that was sent this week. The learner got his roommate involved, instead. However, you should have seen the twinkle in this learner's eye as he reported to me that he had sent out his Valentine package.

I hope the recipient is as happy with the gift, the card, and the personal note as this learner is.

Paul, Betsy, and I spent one long, quick-paced week in June
learning a new skill. We were learning the intricacies of NOW – Dr. Conway's Neuro-development of Words.

This program, like several others on the market
that resulted from Lindamood Bell’s work, provide a gap between the mouth and

Phonics programs, in general, start by associating letter
names with sounds. For example, we practice /ă/, then read and write words
like cat, bat, and sat. Normally, that’s all most of us need. We learn to sound
out words. All is good.

For some learners, however, they struggle with hearing or

this gap. NOW provides the pre-work to phonics instruction in two ways:

Goals Define Actions

Others were wondering why Keith was so insistent about finishing his volcano story by August 29th.

The impetus? He wrote a goal about it at the beginning of summer. He wanted to finish his goal on time. So impressive!

The power of goal setting and deadlines can push some of us into action. This was certainly the case for Keith.

Goal Setting

Setting goals is tradition for some of us. In a teaching setting where careers are at stake, goal setting is crucial.

Goals give us something to aim for. Goals also allow us to lay out a road map.

For academic settings, goals can be set at any time. We don't need to wait for New Year's Day or the start of the school year.

Last month, we used "What is the one goal I want to accomplish within the next thirty days?" as a writing prompt. After sharing and clapping for each person's goal, we guided writers into making these goals measurable.

Visual & Physical Support

Then, as a constant reminder for the next thirty days, we typed up the goals and printed them as bookmarks. Learners referred to them continually each day. We also posted them on the front bulletin board available for all to see.

Anyone who wasn't here on the day we set these goals became cheerleaders. Their task was to partner with someone with a goal and check in on the person's progress, offering help and verbal support along the way.

Celebrations

We tagged the completed goals with hearts. We posted them on a classroom door. While each person set his/her own celebration activity for accomplishing the set goal, the group decided that when we have 95% success rate for all who set goals then we'd do a special celebration with the group.

What goal would you set for the next month?
